Artist Profiles: Miroca Paris | World Music

Acclaimed singer, percussionist, drummer and guitarist Ademiro Paris Miranda, better known as Miroca Paris, was born in 1979 in Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. He is currently based in Lisbon, Portugal.

Miroca grew up in a family of musicians. At the age of seven, Miroca started playing the drums. At 13, he added vocals and guitar to his musical skills.

In 1994, Miroca founded his first group in 1994. A year later, Miroca was invited to play with A Batucada, a percussion ensemble in São Vicente.

A key stage in Miroca’s career was 1998. That year he moved to Portugal. In Lisbon, he plays as a drummer or percussionist with various artists, including his famous uncle Tito Paris. A year later, Sara Tavares offered him to join his group.

In 2000, Miroca received an invitation to join the Cesária Évora ensemble in France. Cesária Évora was the iconic Cape Verdean who had become a world music sensation. For 11 years, Miroca was Cesária’s percussionist, performing live and recording on most of her albums.

Miroca has also performed with various well-known Cape Verdean and international artists, including fadista Cuca Roseta, Tchecka, Dino D’Santiago, Madonna and Nancy Veira.

While Miroca Paris is above all known as a percussionist and virtuoso drummer, on his album D’Alma, he returns to the guitar, as before. With his vast basic knowledge of rhythm, Miroca developed his own unique guitar playing technique. With his live band he created the D’Alma Tour 2017 at the famous world music festival WOMAD.

Since January 2019, Miroca has been working with American pop star Madonna, who lives in Lisbon. Miroca
appears in Madonna’s documentary film ‘The World of MadameX’; in his video for “Medellin” with Maluma; performed live at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and toured with her for 8 months. Miroca played a wide range of musical instruments, such as congas, Moroccan karkabas, and guitar.

In October 2021, Miroca Paris performed in two influential international showcases, EXIB and WOMEX. A month later, he released the EP “Miroca Paris live in Warsaw”.
