Originally from Tasmania and now living in Sydney, Emma Howard has been writing music for the better part of the past ten years.
After a year of traveling abroad (pre-pandemic) where she attended many music festivals, Emma decided to create her own character and started releasing her own originals.
Focused on tragic romance and nostalgia, Bambi crafts a heartbreaking soundtrack of tones and melodies incorporating electronic music and dark pop layering violins, synths and drums with beautiful harmonies.
Its current version is ‘Religion’. “This song was written during a period of resistance. I had already written so many songs about the same thing, and I just felt a little defeated.
“Then I started writing late one night with Timothy McArtney and what I call a ‘hidden song’ came out – a hidden story that wouldn’t have been sung if we weren’t sitting there at that very moment. A memory anchored in my subconscious.
“I love that it happened so easily and I was able to reflect on all the feelings I had around religion (I grew up very Catholic).
“It’s not easy being in a relationship where the beliefs are so starkly opposed. The blurred emotions between understanding and disbelief.”
Who is Bambi O’Hara… I traveled for almost a year and went to many music festivals, and I said to myself, “I’ve written loads of music. I want to be an artist.’
So Bambi O’Hara is a character that I created to release all this music. I’ve been singing and playing guitar since I was 14, so it came pretty naturally.
I seem to… Melancholy, romance and nostalgia – an emotional time warp.
My first gig is… It will be this Saturday (May 28) at the Golden Age Cinema in Sydney. Come!
In the studio, I’m used to… Start humming melodies on the piano or guitar, then write lyrics that match the mood of those melodies (for me!). Interesting chord progressions and melodies definitely lead the mood. I get super obsessed with the lyrics; I see it more as poetry.
If I could shoot with someone… Slim. Florence + The Machine, Twigs FKA, Marina. Too many artists to name if I’m being honest.
Social media is… To be taken in small doses. . . if not at all!
My favorite app right now is… Probably Dazz Cam. It has so many fun features to edit photos or videos in so many different ways, movie-wise. Never as good as the real film camera.
My most embarrassing moment to date was the moment… There are a lot of them, but maybe this time I was bowling and decided to walk the bowling alley – I didn’t know it was incredibly slippery, and I slipped and a massivesssive fall. It was hilarious though.
Life on the road can be… Some of the best memories you will ever have in your life. I’ve been to 44 countries now; looking forward to getting back on the road. Whether it’s a tour, or just to see where life takes me.
If you’d like to have me on your bill, all I’m asking is that the rider contain… Seaweed snacks? !
The scariest scenario I found myself in was… A terrifying scenario was when the accelerator of my first car stopped working, while I was driving over the Tasman Bridge, down the slope! The car started to back up in moving traffic! I turned the car on and off and it restarted thank goodness.
Which celebrity/famous person would you like to be your spokesperson… Slim. Maybe Queens Of The Stone Age (Josh Homme) – that would be crazy.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Barcelona maybe, or San Francisco. I’ve been to both and really liked them both. I like a busy city but an easy/quick escape to the water.
Three people you would like to invite to dinner? Roy Orbison, Jeff Buckley, Salvador Dali – it would be a moving, emotional and creative whirlwind with endless conversation. I also like the idea of a time-traveling dinner with people from different eras.
If we came to your house, what would you cook for us? Ummmm, probably pasta fettuccine with cherry tomatoes, parsley and walnuts.
When it comes to pets, do you love or hate our furry friends? Absolute lover. Even though my cat hair allergies are killing me. It’s worth it.
No matter the expense, send me a case of… Parts of Reece.
The last time I saw the inside of a gymnasium was… Last week for boxing. It’s my favorite workout, and never boring. I get bored easily in the gym so I need it to be a challenge or different every time.
What chore do you hate the most? Vacuuming – isn’t everyone?
Do you have any phobias… Coulrophobia – fear of clowns. It’s not as intense anymore, but when I was a kid, I hated seeing that Ronald McDonald clown. Very strange.
Would you ever be on a reality TV show? Maybe ‘Survivor’ haha.
If you could prank one of your friends, who is your target and how do you take them down? It’s not really a prank, but I love hiding somewhere in the house and often scaring my friends, haha.
The best local takeout restaurant for a midnight meal that will leave you in a food coma? I can’t say sorry! I don’t eat a lot of takeout. Does toasting with Vegemite at midnight count?
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Phoebe from the 90s TV show “Charmed”. I love her fiery yet carefree and loving nature.
The last show you binge-watched? ‘Russian doll’. This insane show about these two characters stuck in a same day time loop, and they keep dying! They wake up every morning trying to figure out how not to die.
Bambi O’Hara plays at the Golden Age Cinema (Sydney) on May 28.
