Jack White released a new preview of Enter alive in paradise in the form of a video for “If I Die Tomorrow”. Realized by Brantley Gutierrezthe clip illuminates the song’s theme of death and dying with haunting monochromatic images of frontier life that culminates with Jack White singing the song’s final lyrics from his grave in the ground.
The song is slow and contemplative, a far cry from White’s garage rock origins, with lyrics that are unusually straightforward for the eccentric bluesman. “If I die tomorrow,” the song begins, “could you find the courage in your heart to sing? / If my mother cries with grief / will you help her with the many things / that she needs from time to time and day to day? The rest of the lyrics read like a letter focusing primarily on the narrator’s mother and the other people who cared for him in life. “I begged and borrowed everyone’s love and they gave for free / and I wish I could give it back / so if I die tomorrow / will you give them all the love I’ve been loaned? ” White sings as he lies in a shallow grave.
