Netflix Movie Passing Announces Official Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange Soundtrack Album

On November 10, Lakeshore Records is released Passing — Music by and inspired by the original film. The film is about two black women who might pass for white, but they live across the color line during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. These women, Irene and Clare, begin to introduce themselves to their circles. opposites and their lives in general. Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange) provided the soundtrack for the film and captured the sound of the era nicely.

“As their lives become more and more intertwined,” says a press release of the film, “Irene finds her once stable existence turned upside down by Clare, and PASSING becomes a fascinating examination of obsession, repression and lies that people tell themselves and that others must protect their carefully constructed realities.

Earlier this year, Hynes was one of the groups scheduled to perform at the multiples NYPopsUp events, as did big names like Patti Smith, Amy Schumer and Rhiannon Giddens. Hynes has historically explored race, sexuality, and identity through his music, in critically acclaimed albums such as Strait of Freetown and Black Swan. The artist was was appointed for two 2021 Grammy Awards for The fields, a classic collaboration with Third Coast Collaboration. Before working on Who passed, the artist has worked on other critically acclaimed films such as When they see us, moonlight, and When they see us.
