Olivia Rodrigo’s new music video “Traitor” recalls her previous videos!

She did it again! At the end of last week, our prom queen “Sour” Olivia rodrigo released his music video for the song “traitor”, which surprised everyone! She informed fans of the fall the same day with a Instagram post music video photos. Captioned on the photos was “surprise! Traitor mv now! ???.”

The video begins with a superimposed view of Olivia leaping through the clouds corresponding to the ethereal vocal backtrack. He then moves on to more aesthetic and vintage visuals, through ocean views, getting on a truck with friends, playing in an arcade, swimming in the school pool and running across a soccer field with some of the video shot through grainy, grunge recordings. It ends with Olivia in space opening a door to the unknown.

The entire clip gives off nostalgic high school vibes with imagery that resonates with the fun times of adolescence. This contrasts with the song itself, which can be interpreted as a reflection on the experience of a former lover who entered another relationship immediately after breaking up.

This music video, like many others by Olivia, is filled with strong symbolic imagery emphasizing surrealism and youth with lights and shadows signifying moments from the past and present. She also sings in a dark and emotional tone that offers a juxtaposition of visuals.

Let’s not forget the parallels! We have noticed images that come back in this video and appear in some of Olivia’s past music videos. One of them is the driving aspect. This, of course, stems from his iconic “driver’s license” clip and continues to be a motif in some of his other clips like “deja vu” and “brutal”. This symbol of driving can certainly reflect moving away from past experiences and moving on to better ones.

Another parallel we found is Olivia coming out of the water. As seen at the end of “good 4 u”, Olivia again comes out of the water in “traitor”. What can this mean? Water often represents rebirth and cleansing, so maybe it symbolizes that Olivia is removing issues from the past in a new chapter!

Finally, the mirror symbol, which we see in his clip “déjà vu”. For “déjà vu”, Olivia looks at herself in a full-length mirror and the image is distorted with The Other Girl. In “traitor”, Olivia holds a hand mirror underwater with her face reflected in the water. It can certainly mean regaining confidence with positive self-reflection.

Will Olivia release any other clips for her Sour album? Will it be “jealousy, jealousy”? “Favorite crime”? Perhaps one of my personal favorites, “happier”? Anyway, we are looking forward to it! Until then, let’s keep rewinding!
