Sam Smith’s Next Album To Explore “Queer Joy” – Music News

Sam Smith has revealed that his next album will be about “queer joy”.

Speaking to Billboard for their cover story on Thursday, the Stay with Me singer opened up about what their next album will entail.

Although the pop star “won’t say their (song) names yet,” pointing out that the record is still in the works, they did share details about the album’s tone.

Billboard described the demos played for them as “jubilant”, with “dance-pop hugs” and “choral expressions of elation” – a change from Sam’s earlier “heartbroken torch songs”.

About the main theme of their new project, Sam explained, “I think joy for me, and for a lot of queer people, is a pretty dangerous place… We’re all masters of pain, and I think that it’s actually a very brave act to step into the strange joy of it all.”

The artist also explained how they were more involved in the production of this album than in previous projects.

“For the first time in my career, I think I really walked into the room and said, ‘I want to learn how to produce more. I want to arrange more vocals than I have. I want to be more involved in everything,'” Sam said. “Obviously I was involved in everything from the start, but now I’ve just grown a bit.”

Sam’s as-yet-untitled album, the sequel to 2020’s Love Goes, has not been given a release date.
